Giants Look Lost in 17-3 Defeat to Chicago
There is only one way to break down this game. And that is in three parts. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Yes I did find some good in this game but it wasn't much.
The Good
- Ahmad Bradshaw & Danny Ware combined for 88 yards on 14 carries. I don't believe many other teams can get that kind of production out of there second and third backs.
- Eli's numbers looked good 7 of 10 62 yards.
- Jacobs had another nice showing running the ball as well as catching it.
- Hakeem Nicks showed a nice ability to get behind the defense and make a 55 yard catch.
- This was only a preseason game. The games don't start counting until September 13th.
- Jay Alford's sprained MCL. Injuries are never good and lets just hope this is the worst for the Giants during this preseason. According to sources the MRI will be done today at 5pm.
- The Giants showed no ability to move the ball down the field and score with their first team offense. In the preseason it is good to at least get one good score from your offense.
- With Seubert and Snee out, Manning couldn't get enough time to move the ball down the field. In the end it resulted in five sacks for the Bears in the game.
- The defense looked lost trying to slow down Cutler and Forte as they marched up and down the field.
- The score 17-3.

thx Paul; pretty accurate summary from Sat nite's embarrassment; a couple of add ons from me and other observations in light of news from last nite ... 1. Good - I also thought Jonathan Goff distinguished himself in LB duty (we need this as this is the thinnest core on D); 2. Bad - all that pash rush speed coming in waves against Carolina seemed to be stalled in the grass and cool in Chicago (e.g., Sintim, Evans, Hill, etc. were non-existent); 3. Ugly - No WRs stepped up (in fact another good was that our RBs - even Jacobs - are starting to become better receivers) - I wonder if JR is exploring whether AZ would even consider trading Boldin to an NFC rival - in my view, he is the only WR out there without baggage (I don't regard his stance as a problem as he has proven himself to be a warrior and a team guy) unlike Edwards, Marshall and the like; we have a bunch of complimentary receivers who are decent 2's and 3's but no #1 (and I don't see it happening any time soon) so why not explore what it would take (e.g., one of these receivers plus perhaps a DL?) ... Now on to the updates, as we now know, Alford has a torn MCL and some damage to his ACL - I guess they're going to rehab until final cuts to see if they have to IR him; also it was disclosed that Canty has a small hamstring tear; worst case scenario (with me adding silver linings) is that they're both IR'd and this opens up spots locking in Tollefson and one/two of the young guys (with a trickle down impact on the practice squad for other areas of perceived depth); when I was up in Albany last week (Thursday and Friday), what I'd now characterize as a lack of sense of urgency (but then I thought was quiet confidence) manifested itself Saturday nite - we need to wake up and recognize that divisions/conferences/championships are not won in the papers and that Philly and Atlanta for sure have upgraded (certainly on offense) while the Pats, Steelers and perhaps Indy are going to be tough to beat come February.
No reason for us to panic however the boys are going to have to put in the time this week both before and after breaking camp and hopefully we'll see some starters back for Saturday nite's affair against the Jets - we need to play well and get some continuity in place.
Keep up the good work
i agree, i forgot Goff, he did have a great game. Chicago made the Giants D look soft. The reason i believe no WR's have stepped up is that the quarterbacks have no time to even get the ball down field, so they have had to check down and hit guys underneath. I believe alford is done for the season unless he can just come in and do snaps while he is injured. THis team will be fine. Great coaching and leadership won't let this team crumble.
